Hand Drill/Bow Drill/Friction Fire

Making and maintaining fire will greatly increase your chance of survival. Fire not only allows you to stay warm but you can also cook, scare away predators, boil water, etc.

Hand Drill/Bow Drill/Friction Fire

Post by Alan Extreme »

Many of us have dream of starting a fire using sticks we can find everywhere, it'll look cool and make you look like a expert survivalist and not to mention have lesser things to carry as well. But the technique require the proper condition before you can even get an amber, much less a fire.

You'll require dry wood, skills and patience + a place not so humid like Singapore.

You'll required a "fire board" - which is a small board to make a hole with ur knife. This is where u place the tip of ur stick and start turning it until the friction cause smoke and amber. The next step is to pour the amber into a "tinder nest", and blow on it till the amber heat up enough to create fire.

Turning the stick with your hand can cause blister and waste your precious energy, a easier way will be to make a "bow" using a second stick and wind around the 1st and start pulling/pushing. This will cause the 1st stick to turn faster and create heat much faster. However a stone is required to place on top of the 1st stick as doing so with your hand can cause injuries. After getting the amber, pour it into the "tinder nest" and start blowing, hopefully your effort pays off.

Friction Fire - as the word stated, is fire cause by friction. Hand and Bow Drills are friction fire as well except it only use the tip of the stick. Friction Fire is basically "sawing" the 2nd stick on the 1st stick at the same place until it create amber. Once amber is seen, pour it into your "tinder nest" and blow, pray hard it works...

My advice - Singapore is too humid, don't try. You'll have better chance to start fire with a lighter, don't make yourself look stupid...
