What is the safe distance from nuclear facilities like nuclear power plant?

Let’s take the example of some high profile nuclear disasters.

2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster – Level 7

The disaster was the most severe nuclear accident since the 26 April 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the only other disaster to be given the Level 7 event classification of the International Nuclear Event Scale. From 17 to 19 March 2011, US military aircraft measured radiation within a 45 km (28 miles) radius of the site. Unfortunately, only 20 kilometres (12 miles) evacuation zone around the power plant was announced.

1999 Tokaimura nuclear accident – Level 4
High levels of caesium detected 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-west of the plant.

1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident – Level 7

30 kilometres (19 mi) radius exclusion zone was announced.

We can see a safety distance is 50 kilometres (31 miles) away from the ground zero; which is equivalent to the area of 2500 km² (1553 miles²).

List of some countries areas falls under the 2500 km². Should any nuclear disasters strike, they have no other place to go but to seek refuge to other countries.
