How to check radiation in your area?

Whether you stay near a nuclear plant or wants to travel the country that had a nuclear disaster, there is always a concern of radiation. Unfortunately, it has been difficult until now to find radiation data which truly has been free of bias, or of the perception of bias in favour of one ideological position or another.
