Works only if it is sunny, most people don't carry magnifying glass because it is bulky and heavy, however if you're looking for alternative ways to start fire you can try fresnel lens. It is the size of a card and can be kept in your wallet. It is very lightweight and cheap, and can be use as a magnifier when reading. To start fire using the sun, it is recommended to have 6x magnification although lower magnification can do the job as well but it'll take a longer time.
